Visual Arts
Welcome to the World of Art at Serra High School!
We offer two exciting art classes for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Basic art includes art history, music appreciation and techniques for drawing, painting and sculpture. Pencils and ink are utilized in the first semester in order to learn foundations; then, in the second semester, we move on to watercolors, pastels, acrylic paint, and colored pencils. We create plaster masks, and wire sculptures as well.
Advanced Art includes modern art history and two field trips, one in the fall to the murals in the Mission and to the Legion of Honor museum. The trip in the fall is to SFMOMA and the Metreon. We create murals, oil paintings, quotes by using calligraphy, icons, silk ties, wax sculptures, Gaudi mosaics and print-making books.
As Serra's art teacher, Miss Farrell's goal is to have students develop a genuine appreciation for art. Some students may not feel that they are talented in all techniques of art, but they can all learn about classic works of art and have an appreciation for how difficult it is to paint, draw and sculpt. In addition to the hands-on nature of the class, there is also an art history component as well as a final about the students' favorite artist.
If you would like additional information, please contact Miss Farrell by email: pfarrell@serrahs.com.
