junipero serra high school
Open House is an exciting time of year when Padres of the present welcome Padres of the future. Junior high school students from all over the Bay Area have an opportunity to walk through the Serra halls, visit classrooms, listen to teachers, and learn about a wide variety of activities and sports programs.
The Serra Band, led by Music Director Jay Jordan, performs for prospective Padres and their parents. They are welcomed by President Lars Lund and Principal Barry Thornton, Ed.D.
Serra students, under the supervision of Admissions Director Randy Vogel, guide guests on small-group tours of the school. Visitors are greeted by teachers and chairpersons of each academic department. The tour highlights Serra’s newest facility, the Center for the Arts and Sciences. Classrooms are equipped with interactive projectors and camera technology. The center includes a second floor science wing with five modern lecture laboratories. The first floor features expanded facilities for fine and performing arts, including a music rehearsal hall and two large art rooms. Other highlights include the expansion of the Academic Resource Center and a full renovation of the aquatics facilities.
In the Serra Chapel, members of the Campus Ministry team discuss Serra's meaningful Campus Ministry and Christian Service programs. Other campus facilities include the Serra locker room and gym, the Danny Frisella '63 Memorial Baseball Stadium, a state-of-the-art weight and wrestling room, the Brady Family Football Stadium and an all-weather track.
Parents are provided with information on how they can become involved in the Serra community. In addition to club booths in the gym, representatives are present from the Mothers’ Auxiliary, the Fathers’ Club, the Booster Club, the Serra Board of Regents, the International Student Program and the Alumni Association. The Mothers’ Auxiliary provides refreshments at the close of the program. Serra’s next Open House will be held at 7 p.m. on December 4, 2014.
