Background:

Junípero Serra High School’s Robotics Club is a Tri-School club which includes students from Serra, Mercy High School in Burlingame and Notre Dame High School in Belmont. All three schools are Catholic High Schools, members of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Robotics Club was established several years ago and has competed in the FIRST competitions in prior years. We are seeking a moderator who will work with students and mentors to lead the program.

Moderator Responsibilities include:

  • Work with students to create a team that designs, builds and competition-ready robots for FIRST competitions
  • Open the shop for students as well as teach and supervise students in safe tool and materials use
  • Supervise the students throughout the design, build, testing, and competition phases of the projects
  • Coordinate with professional engineer mentors who advise and instruct the students
  • Work with Director of Student Activities to manage the Robotics Club budget within school guidelines, coordinating purchases and other expenditures
  • Coordinate and supervise the student participation in FIRST competitions, working with school administration to ensure school requirements are met

Required Skill Set:

  • Technical expertise and experience: The moderator should have a working knowledge of the design and production of robotics, specifically with respect to the types of engineering associated with the FIRST competitions. Specific areas of expertise include design-prototyping, construction, competition, and managing a project calendar.
  • Communication skills: The moderator should establish and maintain good communication throughout the program, working productively with students, mentors, school personnel, and parents. Using these skills, the moderator should be able to inspire high school students in forming the Robotics Team.
  • Administrative skills: The moderator will need to be able to anticipate and manage expenditures, coordinate major purchases and/or donations of equipment and materials with the school, all within the school’s guidelines.

Salary: This is an hourly position.
