Fund a Dream 2019 was an evening to remember–we are excited to report that this year's scholarship benefit has raised more than $1 million in financial aid for our Padres!
"Our financial aid program is critical to Serra's mission of offering a Catholic, college-prep education to qualified students," said Serra Chief Advancement Officer Mike Fadelli '88. "Without the support of our generous benefactors, deserving students would not be able to attend our school and benefit from the transformational experience that Serra provides. Over the years, alumni from all generations have spoken about how Serra's financial aid program changed their lives. They are paying it forward by becoming role models and compassionate leaders in their communities."
More than 600 people attended the event, which was a warm celebration of the Serra community.
San Mateo County Manager Mike Callagy '80 emceed Fund a Dream. Keynote speaker Tom Brady, Sr. shared his experience as a Serra parent and how the school influenced his son's life and built character. Longtime family friend, Fr. Joe Bradley '73, said a few heartfelt words about the Brady family and shared how Tom, Sr. continues to give back to today's Padres by attending football chapel services and mentoring students such as Luke Bottari '19.
Serra's new president, Barry Thornton Ed.D., gave a brief history of Fund a Dream and thanked the original committee for establishing the important event in 2005. Fund a Dream has changed many lives and has enabled Padres from diverse backgrounds to attend Serra. One could have heard a pin drop when guests watched a touching video highlighting the impact that Serra had on 'Atonio '18 and Tita '16 Mafi.
In a surprise video, Tom Brady, Jr. '95 introduced his dad during a memorable tribute.
"I've always learned so much from my dad about giving back," he said. "He has given back to everyone who has ever been part of his life. He was always welcoming people into our home. My dad has always felt that people deserve your best–that's what you should give them every day. I've always taken that to heart because my dad has lived it. He is so accepting, so loving. I grew up watching him pour his heart out to his family, his friends and our entire community. Going to high school at Serra was a privilege–I am incredibly proud of it and the bond that I have with the school and all of my fellow classmates. We are all a family and I love the Padre community."
Thank you to the entire Serra community for making Fund a Dream 2019 such a success and for making a significant difference for our Padres! If you would like to contribute to the Fund a Dream Scholarship Program, CLICK HERE.
