Matthew Conry '19 is this year's winner of the John Philip Sousa Band Award. He will attend Loyola Marymount University next year after earning the prestigious Aruppe Scholarship. The selection process for the Aruppe Scholarship is highly competitive and is worth $92,000 over four years. Matthew, a graduate of Good Shepherd School (Pacifica), will study economics.
Matthew has impressed on the drums for four years in the jazz and symphonic bands—adding the praise band to his repertoire as a senior. He was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society and won the Graduation Activity Medal this past spring. A well-rounded high school student, Matthew was a National Honor Society member as well as an All-League middle blocker for Serra's championship volleyball team. His 1510 SAT score puts him in the 99th percentile of test-takers nationwide.
Despite his busy schedule, Matthew found time to devote 390 hours to service to his community. The majority of his service was spent at Table of Plenty in Half Moon Bay, where he served food to homeless people. The experience for members of the homeless community is described by Table of Plenty:
"Every Thursday evening, our Table of Plenty volunteers create a beautiful dining room, complete with table cloths, fresh flowers, real plates, flatware and music. Each guest is seated and served a warm, healthy meal by our volunteer servers."
We are proud of Matthew's accomplishments in music, academics, athletics and service at Serra and we wish him well at LMU next year.
