New School Chaplain to Join Serra

Serra High School is delighted to announce that Father Michael Liliedahl will serve as its new school chaplain. Father Liliedahl joins Serra from St. Catherine's in Burlingame where he has been the associate pastor since July 1, 2019.

"I am very excited to be at Serra -- the camaraderie and brotherhood I have witnessed between the boys is incredible," Liliedahl said. "I look forward to immersing myself into the culture there."

The San Francisco Archdiocese has assigned Liliedahl to Serra 50 percent of the time, while he continues to serve the St. Catherine's community.

"I am both excited and appreciative that Father Liliedahl has been assigned to Serra High School," said President Barry Thornton. "Father Liliedahl has a wealth of experience in Catholic high school and I am so happy that he will be able to provide support for the young padres at Serra."

Liliedahl will join Father Joe Bradley '73, who serves as Serra's principal celebrant and football chaplain.

"We are particularly fortunate that in addition to Father Liliedahl, we are blessed to have Father Joe, who has served us so faithfully for the last 20 years and will continue to support Serra Padres and their families in all aspects of their lives."

A native of Juneau, Alaska, Liliedahl, now 38, is a long way from home. Liliedahl grew up in a family of five, the oldest of three -- a sister and a brother. His mom was a teacher and his father a pilot of water planes in his hometown. Liliedahl joined the seminary in Juneau, where he was then transferred to study at Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington in 2001.

Once on the mainland, Liliedahl said he began to see how different life was in his hometown.

"Everything is different in Alaska, but you don't see how different it is until you live life outside of Alaska," he said.

After finishing his undergraduate degree in religion at Gonzaga in 2005, Liliedahl went on to earn a master's in education at Providence College. He then joined St. Patrick's Seminary and University in Menlo Park where he earned his masters' of arts in Theology.

While in school, Liliedahl taught and coached in several capacities, with a major focus on all-gender, faith based education.

When not serving the community, Liliedahl enjoys traveling and watching anything sports related. He is a fan of teams that dot the globe, and said he has a tendency to set the alarm to watch his favorite soccer team from Germany in order to catch the game.

Please join the Serra community in welcoming Father Liliedahl.
