Senior Andrew Abbey receives Cross Country scholarship to Menlo College
Serra Senior Andrew Abbey will attend Menlo College next year, where he will study business and marketing while running cross country for the Oaks. Andrew, a Charles Armstrong School alumnus, has been running cross country since sixth grade. It was a new sport for him but it quickly captured his interest. Running, he said, continues to be a fundamental motivator for him as a person and a student.
"Running is an amazing sport because it forces you to work harder to achieve a better time and pushes you to be better and stronger every time," he said.
During his time at Serra, Andrew said he has had to step up his running to play on a college scale. He said this year he was able to hit standard times and add more mileage. He attributes much of his success to his experiences as a student at Serra.
"Serra teaches you to put in the work and dedication. It teaches you to work hard to accomplish your goals... and it is a great feeling when you do," Andrew said.
A member of Serra's Encounter Team and a third year intern on the Fire Explorer Program for San Mateo, Andrew said he is looking very forward to the next chapter in his life.
"Serra has taught me to never give up, even during hard times. Faith has given me clearance and guidance and my family has always been supportive of me," he said.
Andrew looks forward to college life in the dorms and excelling in Menlo's cross country program. But before that, he hopes to break the 4:30 mile during track season. We are proud of Andrew's accomplishments here at Serra, and we wish him well at Menlo College. We are pleased to feature him as one of the outstanding students in our Class of 2019.
