Congratulations to Serra senior Brooks Taner, who has committed to swim for the University of Arizona next year! Brooks will be a Pac-12 scholarship swimmer for the Wildcats after also considering offers from USC, Cal, Notre Dame and Denver. He is an honor student and has taken classes such as Honors algebra II, Honors physics and Honors calculus over his four years at Serra.
Swimming is in Brooks' genes. His father, Ugur, swam for UC Berkeley and in the 1992 Olympics, representing Turkey. Ugur met his wife, Liesl, at the University of Arizona where they both swam as post-grads. Ugur has been an assistant swim coach for Serra for the past three years and will take on the head coaching role this spring.
Heading into his senior swim season, Brooks already boasts one of the most decorated swim resumes in the nation.
- In his signature event, the 100 butterfly, Brooks ranked sixth in the nation among 16-year-olds (31st among all high-schoolers).
- In the 200 butterfly, Brooks ranked 10th among 16-year-olds and 54th among all high-schoolers.
- In the 200 medley relay, Brooks ranked sixth among 16-year-olds swimming the backstroke leg, and 37th among high-schoolers.
Brooks also traveled to Budapest over the summer, competing in the FINA Swimming World Cup. He finished 33rd in the 200 fly, representing the United States and competing against the best swimmers in the world.
"I love Serra and everything about it," reflected Brooks. "The teachers and coaches have always inspired me to look forward to coming to school and enjoy learning. Serra is special because of the environment. The brotherhood is strong here. Each day, Serra has always been a place where guys can be guys and that is what I love most about this school."
We are proud of Brooks' accomplishments and wish him well at the University of Arizona next year.
