On the menu today during Cooking with Mrs. Ortiz was pasta alfredo and garlic bread. The class, scheduled during Activity Period on today's Distance Learning calendar, is one of many optional learning opportunities offered at Serra.
Students voted on the menu items and a list of five different entrees or desserts have been chosen as a result. Classes will take place every couple of weeks during the Activity Period.
Led by Assistant Principal of Student Life Marybeth Ortiz, this learning block blends Ortiz' love of cooking with the opportunity for students to come together and learn a new skill. Other Activity Period classes include home workouts with Coach Carson and Stations of the Cross this Friday.
"I love to cook, so it was fun to be able to interact with the boys in a more relaxed setting," Ortiz said. "Hopefully today they learned something that they can use in the future," she said.
Ingredients were sent out on the Week Ahead schedule and the class met from 11 a.m. to noon.
Vincent Wills '23 was one of a handful of Padre chefs who took the cooking class today. While there was just one small burn hole in his mom's pot holder, the entree turned out great, he said.
"I didn't think I would be doing this during distance-learning, but it was fun," he said. "The garlic bread was especially good."
Next on the menu is homemade chocolate chip cookies. Dates to come in the Week Ahead.
