Twenty-five Serra students and staff members gathered at Second Harvest of Silicon Valley in San Carlos this week to help sort and package food to be distributed throughout San Mateo County during the holidays. The group sorted more than 9,980 pounds of canned and packaged food during the evening.
Sophomore Andrew Stewart echoed the feelings of the entire group when he said, "The experience serving at the food bank was rewarding because they provide help to so many families."
Senior Michael Sarhatt added, "I enjoyed helping our local community alongside some of my Padre baseball brothers."
The service opportunity is an annual holiday event organized by faculty member Randy Vogel.
Founded in 1974, Second Harvest is one of the largest food banks in the nation providing food to more than a quarter of a million people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties every month. More than half the people served are kids and seniors.
