Zappos Founder Speaks to Serra's Business Innovation Club

We all take for granted the convenience of shopping for shoes online, choosing a pair with flair, and finding a box on the porch a few days later. Serra students met the man behind this brilliant idea a few weeks ago when Nick Swinmurn, founder of online retail giant Zappos, spoke to the Business Innovation Club.

Swinmurn spoke about entrepreneurship and the evolution of his business ventures. His other businesses have included Nachoria and Basecamp Fitness in Burlingame, and he also is part of the ownership groups of the Golden State Warriors and Swansea City Football Club.

According to Swinmurn, impeccable customer service is key. He also encouraged the Padres to go for their dreams and not to be discouraged by naysayers.

"Don't have a big ego," he added. "At Zappos everyone saw themselves as equal, all working for the same goals. You've got to relate to everyone because it's a team effort."

Business Innovation Club President Garrett Fetisoff '19 was impressed by Swinmurn's talk. He particularly found these words of wisdom helpful: "You have to find value in what you are doing; if you do not find value in what you do, then you won't been happy or successful at it."

"I really enjoyed how real and relatable his talk was," said Matt Olson '19, vice president of the Business Innovation Club. "Nick changed jobs and careers many times before he figured out what he's good at and what he wants to do. I walked away with more confidence about what my own future might look like."
