Tyler Ormsby Named Serra's New Head Water Polo Coach and Aquatics Director
The Serra High School Padres Water Polo team will start its 2022 season with a new head coach. Serra is pleased to announce that it has named Tyler Ormsby as its new water polo coach and aquatics director, effective August 1.
A recent graduate of UCLA, Ormsby has experience as a water polo coach, player, team captain and referee.
Ormsby said his intent is to build a consistent championship caliber water polo team that excels with integrity.
"My coaching philosophy is founded on the development and maintenance of sound fundamentals and the preparation and execution of strategic tactics with an emphasis on team cohesiveness and unity, industriousness and sportsmanship," Ormsby said. "I lead by example and cultivate learning environments where student-athletes and coaches alike practice and play with a growth mindset, always challenging ourselves to perform at our highest level."
Ormsby played water polo for four years and swam competitively for Valhalla High School in El Cajon for three years, setting the school record in the 200 medley relay swim. He was a four-year varsity athlete on the water polo team, named MVP, team captain and Player of the Year. Collegiately, Ormsby played for the University of the Pacific in Stockton and UCLA. He graduated with a bachelor's of arts in history from UCLA in March 2020 and is currently acquiring a teaching credential.
An effective communicator, Ormsby said that he intends to work diligently to help his student-athletes achieve their personal goals.
"My manner of communication with student-athletes is built on enthusiasm, encouragement, and positivity. I have and always will look for every opportunity to reach a student-athlete in a way that best serves them," he said.
Ormsby comes from a family of talented water polo players and coaches. His father, Greg, is a longtime San Diego water polo player and coach who coached at Hilltop and Poway high schools, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. Cadet and Junior National teams. Greg Ormsby is now manager of the Del Mar Water Polo Club with his oldest son, Brett.
According to Serra Athletics Director Justin Ferdinand, this new hire sets Serra apart from the rest.
"We are thrilled to have Tyler join our athletic department. His passion and dedication to coaching water polo will hopefully help take our program to the next level," he said.
Serra Principal Charlie McGrath said that he is thrilled to welcome Coach Ormsby.
"Tyler will continue to build our aquatics program with an emphasis on what it means to be a scholar athlete and Padre. His excitement for coaching water polo and swimming made him the superior candidate for this unique opportunity at Serra," McGrath said.
Ormsby will begin his new position on August 1.
