Position Description:
Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Director of Aquatics is responsible for the overall scheduling, usage, safety and maintenance of the aquatics facility and oversees all interscholastic aquatics (swim instruction and water polo) programs for students and external clubs. In addition, the Director of Aquatics would serve as the Varsity Water Polo Coach. This position is also expected to serve as a Substitute Teacher, as necessary.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for all aspects of the interscholastic aquatics programs of the school including implementation, development, promotion and evaluation of all swim instruction, swim club and water polo activities.
- Assumes responsibility for the conduct and deportment of student athletes to ensure that the school’s regulations regarding aquatics (swim instruction and water polo) are followed and takes appropriate action in consultation with the Athletic Director and Director of Finance for any infractions therein.
- Plans, develops and implements aquatics (swim instruction and water polo) programs and coordinates staff in the implementation of the programs.
- In charge of security for the aquatics facility and pool deck at all times.
- Ensure that all aspects of the aquatics programs meet standards as specified by the school, the Archdiocese, the Western Catholic Athletic League, Central Coast Section and California Interscholastic Federation.
- Ensures that the aquatics facility/programs are properly registered with the USS/Pacific Swimming (United States Swimming Association) and USWP (United States Water Polo Association) at all times.
- Responsible for ensuring that all aquatics coaches, swim instructors and lifeguards are certified in CPR, First Aid/AED and Advanced Water Safety and for ensuring that personal certification in all of the above-indicated are current at all times.
- Works with students, coaches, teachers and parents to maintain academic eligibility of athletes as a high priority.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher with a degree in Recreation or closely related field
- Four years experience in management, operation and maintenance of an aquatics facility and knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive aquatic recreation program
- Successful experience as a high school coach or equivalent experience as a player or club coach at the appropriate age level with demonstrated ability to teach, organize and supervise student-athletes
- Knowledge of the fundamental skills and techniques, as well as the advanced techniques in the sport
- Demonstrates successful personality and character traits appropriate to Catholic educational leadership and the ability to teach, enforce, advocate and model appropriate behavior, character traits, Christian and educational values to student-athletes
- Demonstrates successful management and organizational skills
- Demonstrates successful ability to work with parent groups, administrators, staff and students
- Must be a Certified Pool Operator or ability to obtain in six (6) months of employment.
- Must have current CPR/First Aid/AED and Advanced Water Safety certifications or ability to obtain within 60 days and must be kept current at all times
- Must have current Water Safety/Lifeguard Instructor certifications or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment
- Knowledge of filtration and chemical injection systems as well as pool chemistry
- Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations to assure compliance and public safety
- Knowledge of United States Swimming and Diving rules and regulations
- Such alternative or additional qualifications as the school deems appropriate
