Padre Wrestling History
1982-83: Serra Padre wrestling began in 1982 under the guidance of Coach Bob 'Biceps' |
1983-84: Rich Bassi and Dan Burgett win PAL titles. Rich Bassi places second at the Central Coast Section Tournament to become the first Serra Padre wrestler to qualify for the California State Championship Tournament. Rich Bassi was named MVP. |
1984-85: Dan Burgett wins his second PAL title. Dan Burgett was named MVP. |
1985-86: Coach Davis was replaced with Coach Lars Lund. Dan Burgett wins his third PAL title and becomes the second Padre wrestler to qualify for the California State Championship Tournament by placing 2nd at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Dan Burgett was named MVP. |
1986-87: The Padres join the West Catholic Athletic League wrestling with Paul Bristow as the head coach. The Padres won their first WCAL wrestling team title. They were led by seniors Dan Burgett, Paul Olson, Mark Vella and Ron Waldschmidt whom all won individual WCAL titles. Burgett moved on to become the first Padre to win the Central Coast Section title and qualify for the state meet for the second straight year. Dan Burgett was named MVP. |
1987-88: Andy Cost, Adam Kain, and Chris Christoforidis all won WCAL wrestling titles. Jeff Sereni was named MVP. |
1988-89: Tony Biagi and Chris Christoforidis won WCAL wrestling titles. The Padres finished second in WCAL and sixth in CCS. Jeff Sereni and Chris Christoforidis were named Co-MVPs. |
1989-90: Head Coach Chet Dickson and Assistant Coach Andy 'Dice' Jacobs took over the Padres. Mike Klobuchar, Kip Taylor, and Tony Biagi won WCAL wrestling titles. Tony Biagi and Erick Vera qualified for the California State Championship Tournament. Vera won three of his five matches at the state meet and finished ninth. Tony Biagi was named MVP. |
1990-91: Erick Vera won the WCAL and finished fourth at the Central Coast Section Tournament to qualify for the California State Championship Tournament. Erick Vera was named MVP. |
1991-92: Erick Vera won the WCAL and Central Coast Section titles. Erick advanced to the California State Championship Tournament for the third year in a row. He became the first Padre to medal at the state meet when he finished third and was only one loss away from the state title. He finished his senior year with a 45-3 record. Erick Vera was named MVP. |
1992-93: Chris Vera was named MVP. |
1993-94: Head Coach Alan Pometta took over the reigns. Chris Vera placed fourth at CCS and qualified for the California State Championship Tournament. Chris Vera was named MVP. |
1994-95: Tony Lorber was named MVP. |
1995-96: Bill Gang became the head coach. Unbeaten WCAL champion Tony Lorber led the Padres to third place in the WCAL. Tony Lorber was named MVP. |
1996-97: Marc Kollerer and Tony Lorber won WCAL titles. Marc finished fourth and Tony finished fifth at the Central Coast Section Tournament to qualify for the California State Championship Tournament. John Saddi was named MVP. |
1997-98: Marc Kollerer finished fifth and Bill Benesi finished sixth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. The Padres finished third in WCAL. The seniors were named MVPs. |
1998-99: '89 Alumni Jeff Sereni took over the head coaching position. Scott Stancil was named MVP. |
1999-2000: Jon Kollerer placed sixth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Joel Faustino placed fifth at the Central Coast Section Tournament and was named MVP. |
2000-01: Rohaum Raji won a WCAL title. Mark Allen was named MVP. |
2001-02: Rohaum Raji and Armand Sarvarian won WCAL titles. Rohaum Raji and Armand Sarvarian placed sixth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Armand Sarvarian was named MVP. |
2002-03: Rohaum Raji won his third straight WCAL title and finished second at the Central Coast Section Tournament. He completed his senior year with a 26-4 record. Rohaum Raji was named MVP. |
2003-04: Dan Vogl becomes Head Coach. Andrew Hutchison won the WCAL title. Andrew Hutchison was named MVP. |
2004-05: The Padres qualified four wrestlers for the Central Coast Section Tournament. The JV team beat Bellarmine in the dual meet giving Bellarmine their first JV loss in the history of WCAL wrestling. The Padres JV teams won its first ever WCAL wrestling title. Jared Fone was named MVP. |
2005-06: Ray Baldonado won a WCAL title. The Padres finished second in WCAL on the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels. Steve Spina placed sixth at the Central Coast Section Tournament and was named MVP. |
2006-07: Quite simply the best year ever in Serra wrestling history. The Padres were WCAL team champions at the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels. They had three varsity league champions for the first time since 1990 with Steve Spina (119), Koa LamCenteio (125) and Andrew Guttas (171) winning the WCAL. Steve Erickson placed fifth and Andrew Guttas placed second at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Andrew Guttas qualified for the California State Championship Tournament. The varsity team sent 13 out of 14 wrestlers to the Central Coast Section Tournament and finished ninth. Andrew Guttas was named MVP. |
2007-08: Hanna Malak (189) wins the WCAL title. The junior varsity wins another WCAL title. Hanna Malak becomes the third Padre to ever win the Central Coast Section Tournament and qualifies for the California State Championship Tournament where he finishes in the top 12. Hanna Malak is named MVP. |
2008-09: Travis Roberts (103), JP Rastrullo (119), and Steven Touba (152) win WCAL titles. The freshman team are WCAL Champions. Travis Roberts is the first Padre freshman to win a WCAL title. The Padres send 11 to the Central Coast Section Tournament. Jared Roberts (125) and Joey Lopez (215) place sixth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Steven Touba is named MVP. |
2009-10: Travis Roberts (112), Bo Hall (125), and Joey Lopez (215) win WCAL titles. The freshman team repeats as WCAL Champions. The Padres send 11 to the Central Coast Section Tournament. Travis Roberts (112) places fifth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Andre LaRosa (103) places sixth at the Central Coast Section Tournament and becomes the first freshman in Serra wrestling history to medal at CCS. Travis Roberts is named MVP. |
2010-11: Travis Roberts (119), Luimere Hayes (152) and Tim Glauninger (215) win WCAL titles and three other Padres finish second: Bo Hall (140), Nick Alspaugh (171) and Chad Thodos (189). The Padres send 11 to the Central Coast Section Tournament. Travis Roberts (119) places third at the Central Coast Section Tournament and qualifies for the California State Championship Tournament. Nick Alspaugh (171) places fifth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Travis Roberts is named MVP. |
2011-12: Ricardo Garcia becomes the head wrestling coach. Travis Roberts (126), Jerry DeLaRosa (132), Chad Thodos (182) and Tim Glauninger (220) win WCAL titles. The freshman team wins a WCAL title. Travis Roberts becomes the first Padre wrestler in school history to win four WCAL titles. Four other Padres finish second. Elias Hernandez (113), Andre La Rosa (120), Ulysses Molina (145) and Jon Beering (HWT). The Padres finish in second place in the WCAL and send 12 to the Central Coast Section Tournament. Serra finishes with a school record, four CCS medals, and in fifth place at CCS for the highest team finish in school history. Tim Glauninger (220) becomes the fourth Padre wrestler to win the CCS Championships. Travis Roberts (126) places second at the Central Coast Section Tournament and both qualify for the California State Championship Tournament. Elias Hernandez (113) and Jerry DeLaRosa (132) place fifth. Travis Roberts goes 4-2 at the State Tournament and finishes in the top 12 in California. Travis Roberts and Tim Glauninger are named co-MVP’s. |
2012-13: The second best year ever in Serra wrestling history. The Padres were WCAL team champions at the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels. They had three varsity league champions for the first time since 2007 with Jerry DeLaRosa (132), Chris Ipolitto (160) and Chad Thodos (171) winning WCAL. The Padres send all 14 to the Central Coast Section Tournament. Chad Thodos placed sixth and Elias Hernandez and Jerry DeLaRosa placed second at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Elias Hernandez and Jerry DeLaRosa qualified for the California State Championship Tournament. The varsity team finished ninth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Jerry DeLaRosa finishes 3-2 at State and in the Top 16. Elias Hernandez and Jerry DelaRosa were named co-MVP’s. |
2013-14: The Padres were WCAL team champions at the junior varsity and freshman levels. Joey D’Agostino (220) wins the WCAL crown. The Padres send 11 of 14 to the Central Coast Section Tournament. Sean Clarke (138) places fifth at the Central Coast Section Tournament. Sean Clarke is named MVP. |
2014-15: The Padres repeated as WCAL team champions at the junior varsity level for the third year in a row and freshman for the fourth year in a row. The Padres tie the school record for individual WCAL Champions with four: Erik Clark (160), Dominick Christmas (195) and Felix Aberoutte (220) win their first championships and Joey D’Agostino (285) defended his 2014 WCAL crown. The Padres send all 14 to the Central Coast Section Tournament for only the second time in school history. Dominick Christmas places second at the Central Coast Section Tournament and becomes the fourteenth Padre to wrestle in the State Championships. Dominick Christmas is named MVP. |
2015-16: Mike Klobuchar ’90 becomes the new head coach. The Padres win the WCAL Varsity Championship by going undefeated (6-0) in dual meet action. The Padres have three individual WCAL Champions as Evan Jones (138), Jaylyn Membreno (170) win their first championships while Dominick Christmas (195) wins his second in a row. The Padres send 12 to the Central Coast Section Tournament where they finish ninth out of 90 teams. The Padres have three CCS medals and are led by Ryan Peralta’s sixth place finish at 220, Jaylyn Membreno’s second place finish at 170 (becoming the fifteenth Padre to qualify for the State Championship) and Dominick Christmas’s first place finish at 195, where he becomes only the fifth Padre to be a CCS Champion and fourth Padre to compete in the State Championships multiple times. Jaylyn Membreno and Dominick Christmas are named Co-MVPs. |
2016-17: The Padres win the WCAL Varsity Championship following a three-way tie in the dual meets (5-1) and an outright dominate win of the league championship tournament. This is the first time in school history that the Padres win consecutive WCAL championships. The Padres have three individual WCAL Champions as Rolando Pineda (122) and Evan Behrendt (184) win their first championships while Evan Jones (138) wins his second in a row. Serra sends 12 members to the Central Coast Section Tournament where they finish 11th out of 77 teams. The Padres have two CCS medalists led by Evan Jones 4th place finish at 138 and Evan Behrendt’s 3rd place finish at 184 (becoming the sixteenth Padre to qualify for the State Championship). Evan Jones and Evan Behrendt are named Co-MVPs. |
2017-18: The Padres have three individual WCAL Champions as Charles Matthew (122), Jack Woods (170) and Marcellus Eison (HWT) win their first championships. The Padres send 10 to the Central Coast Section Tournament where they finish 18th out of 77 teams. The Padres have one CCS medalists Marcellus Eison (HWT). Jack Wood is named MVP. |
2018-19: The Padres have four individual WCAL Champions as Charles Matthews (120), Jack Woods (170) and Marcellus Eison (HWT) win their 2nd WCAL titles in a row and Mike Pechina (145) wins his first WCAL championship. The Padres send 9 to the Central Coast Section Tournament where they finish 15th out of 70 teams. The Padres tie the school record and have four CCS medalists Charles Matthews (120) places 4th, Jack Woods (170) and Marcellus Eison (HWT) place 5th and Mike Pechina (145) places 6th while Arman Popli finishes 8th but wins the Burritozilla at Iguana’s challenge against Coach Monney. Charles Matthews and Jack Woods are named Co-MVPs. |
2019-20: Charles Matthews (132) becomes the fifth Padre to be a three-time league champion and third, four-time league championship finalist as he three peats as a WCAL Champion. The Padres qualify all 14 weights to the Central Coast Section Tournament where they finish 29th out of 74 teams. Charles Matthews places 6th at CCS and is named MVP. Charles becomes the fifth Padre to commit to a D1 college (Rich Bassi ‘84 Cal Poly, Adam Montgomery ‘01 American University, Nick Alspaugh ’12 Northern Colorado and Tim Glauninger ’12 Lehigh) program. Charles becomes the first Big 10 commit as he joins the University of Iowa wrestling team. |
2020-21: COVID-19 Reduced season of 6 weeks. Only WCAL Dual matches are held and no tournaments or championships. Padres Enzo Cappabianca and Aidan Quinn are named Co-MVPs as they go undefeated and win every match by Pin. |
2021-22: The Padres qualify all 13 out of 14 weights to the Central Coast Section Tournament where they finish 15 out of 72 teams. Enzo Cappabianca is the WCAL Champion at 170 and is named MVP for the 2nd time. The freshman and junior varsity teams are WCAL Team Champions going 6-0 while the varsity placed 2nd going 5-1. |
2022-23: The Padres qualify all 14 weights to the Central Coast North Regional. They qualify seven weights to the CCS Masters Tournament, where they finish 30th out of 58 teams. Rocco Forte (120), Audie Lennemann (152) and Andrew Jarrett (195) are WCAL Champions. The freshman and junior varsity teams are WCAL Team Champions going 6-0, while the varsity placed 2nd going 5-1. Francois Ricard is named MVP. |
2023-24: The Padres qualify all 13 out of 14 weights to the Central Coast North Regional. They qualify nine weights to CCS Masters Tournament where they finish 23rd out of 86 teams. They are led by Preston Dixon (220) who is a finalist and places 2nd. Freshman Sebastian Garcia becomes the 2nd freshman in school history to place at the tournament when he finishes 5 th at (132). At the WCAL Championships, Elliot Schnelker (157) and Preston Dixon (220) are WCAL Champions while Ryder Doelschal (106), Luciano Cano (113), Sebastian Garcia (132), Thomas Lussier (190) and Trevor Wilson (285) are finalists. The junior varsity team is the WCAL Tournament Champions, while the varsity and freshman place 2nd going 5-1. Preston Dixon is named MVP. |
