There are few things Charles Matthews cannot do. An outstanding student, incredible athlete and gracious and kind man, Charles has proven that there are no limits to his achievements.
Charles will continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Iowa, where he hopes to study finance and wrestle for the legendary Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes are a world-renowned program and most recently became the 2020 Big10 Champions and were favored to win the 2020 NCAA Championships before COVID 19 canceled the event.
Charles is a four-year varsity starter for the Padres and was a four time WCAL Champion finalist and three time champion with his only loss in the finals as a freshman. Charles placed fourth and sixth in the Central Coast Section Championships.
Charles is a leader on and off the mat. Charles has served as class president for three years and was a Wrestling Team Captain for three years. Charles was in the BBQ club his freshman year and most recently, coached at the Peninsula Wrestling Club this past year.
Charles excelled in the classroom with a GPA of 4.1, is a 2020 National Honor Society inductee and was accepted to 10 colleges but chose Iowa to continue chasing his academic and wrestling career goals.
Charles was co-MVP in 2019 and the 2020 MVP for the Padres. In the 2019-20 season, Charles placed at every tournament he entered. He was the Cupertino Bianchinni Tournament Champion; placed second at the Peninsula Invitational, Weber Lawson, Coast Classic, Jim Root; and placed sixth at Mid-Cals. Charles was named in the San Mateo Daily Journal as “Athlete Honor Roll” multiple times.
One thing Charles will never forget about Serra are the friendships. “I will always remember the bonds I have built in the past four years that I believe will stand the test of time no matter how far we are from each other,” he said.
“Serra taught me how to operate on my own as a man. That people aren't going to carry me through life and that I have to be responsible for myself and everything I do,” he added.
The love and support from his mom and dad have also been fundamental in Charles’ desire to achieve more.
“Thank you, mom and dad, for the unconditional love and support. The early mornings, the late nights, the grumpy study time, all of it. Thank you, I love you,” he said.
He is also grateful for his devoted family. “To my family, thank you all for your support as well. Coming to my matches, no matter how far, and flying to my events out of town, thank you.”
His story wouldn’t be complete without his message to his fellow Padres. “Just wanna thank my friends -- my ‘Ride or Dies’. The homies. THA GOOOOOONS -- all of them. Thank you guys. You made these last four years the most amazing years I have experienced with some of the funniest classes of my life. And some of the most hype games and adventures I will ever experience. I am forever grateful for having met you guys.”
Congratulations on all your achievements, Charles! We are so excited to watch you on the college mat!
