Michael Smoot is off to Whittier College, where he will play water polo and study business this fall.
A four-year water polo player, Michael was one of Serra’s 11 student athletes to sign to play collegiately on College Signing Day. Michael also swam for three years at Serra, was a yell leader for two years and was a part of the ultimate frisbee club as well. He was the senior spirit leader his senior year.
One of Michael’s fondest memories is beating the Burlingame Panthers this fall in a water polo match. “My greatest achievement to date came this fall in a water polo match against BHS, we won the game 17-12 and it was only at the end of the match when I found out I had 12 of our 17 goals,” he said.
Michael’s time at Serra showed him that he is responsible for his future.
“Serra made me realize that nobody is going to hold my hand and make me better,” he said. “If I want to be better than I was yesterday, I'm the only person who can make that happen."
One thing Michael said he will always remember are, “my brothers, the men who supported me and helped turn me into who I am today -- they are people who I hope to keep in my life.”
Michael also thanks his family for the support they have shown him on his journey.
“I cannot thank you guys enough for being there for me and picking me up when I'm down, you've been there for all my mistakes and downfalls. I love you guys.”
In the next 10 years, Michael said, “I want to be successful enough to set myself up for the next 10 years.”
You’re certainly headed in the right direction, Michael! Best of luck at Whittier! Congratulations!
