Serra Musical Theatre Conservatory

Open to boys and girls ages 12-18

Attend morning workshops in acting, dance, singing and technical theatre. Spend afternoons rehearsing for a major musical production that will culminate in a public performance at the end of the session.

This summer, SMTC is thrilled to bring Once on This Island to life onstage. Through almost non-stop song and dance, this full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical Gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and even death.

The conservatory is open to students ages 12-18. Aspiring singers, dances, actors, and stage crafters will hone their skills under the direction of Tri-School Productions' staff of professionals. Tri-School Productions is the renowned theatre company of Serra, Mercy and Notre Dame High Schools.

Daily Schedule:

Workshops take place mornings from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., with a half hour lunch. Rehearsals for Once on This Island will run from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Note:

Students participating in Serra’s academic summer school program may participate in some workshops and in the afternoon component of the theatre camp, which is the production of Once on This Island. This opportunity is available by special arrangement. Please email here for more information.

 


Extended Care

Extended Care, provided through the Serra Sports and Recreation Camp, is available to Middle School students participating in Serra Musical Theatre Conservatory.

Morning Care, 7:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.: $65/one-week session
Afternoon Care, 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: $65/one-week session

Acting Workshop

Students will learn:
  • vocal and physical warm-ups/techniques to support the rehearsal process
  • how to make better and bolder choices before and during auditions
  • basic improvisational skills that contribute to natural and interesting performances
  • character building skills and how to free their creative instincts

Dance Workshop

Students will learn:
  • skills necessary for picking up choreography for audition purposes
  • ways to incorporate character traits into their choreography
  • various genres of dance styles such as musical theatre, jazz and ballet
  • how to move freely and comfortably onstage

Vocal Workshop

Students will learn:
  • how to properly warm up their voices in preparation for singing
  • various types of music and how to sing in a large chorus, as part of a trio and as a soloist
  • how to cut their music into appropriate sections for auditions; how to present their audition pieces to a pianist and explain how they’d like to sing it
  • how to select songs for their voice type to create a rep book for musical auditions

Technical Theatre Workshop

Students will learn:
  • basic construction of costume pieces for a particular production and understand how to choose pieces that are historically accurate/appropriate for a show
  • the difference between various lighting instruments; how to hang and focus lighting instruments and run basic light board operations
  • how to setup audio equipment, hang/run audio cables, understand microphone equipment, and how to properly mic actors as well as how to manipulate audio levels to obtain excellent sound quality
  • how to design, build and paint scenery using a variety of tools, drawings and photos, with an emphasis on safety (all students will be supervised while using power tools)
  • the skills necessary to manage a theatrical production as a stage manager and production manager
